“Rehoboth Metro” (2024)

Make small talk at the Delaware beaches, and inevitably, the topic of traffic in eastern Sussex County comes up. It’s dreadful, especially during the summer months. A few years ago, inspired by an exhibit of transit posters, I created a parody Metro map for my hometown of Salisbury, and later, Chincoteague. The maps were fun and even drew the attention of Paul Wiedefeld, Maryland Secretary of Transportation and the former head of the Washington Metro. So after hearing persistent moaning about the congestion around Rehoboth Beach and Lewes, I went back to the drawing board. Even if a “Rehoboth-Lewes Metro” will never happen, it still fun to dream — especially when you get stuck in gridlock on Route 1.” — Erick Sahler
